Osteopathic care, shaped around you

Understanding the wider picture

Pain and discomfort don’t always exist in isolation. How you move, work, exercise, sleep and manage the demands of everyday life can all form part of the picture.

At Grow Clinic, osteopathic care is individual to you. The aim is to understand what’s happening, what may be contributing to it and what we can do together to help you move and function more comfortably.

Osteopathy is more than ‘just backs’

Osteopathic treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal problems

Back and neck pain might be what osteopathy is best known for, but people seek osteopathic help for a wide range of musculoskeletal problems. These may include back pain, neck pain, joint and muscle pain, headaches associated with neck problems, minor sports injuries, work or activity-related problems, arthritic pain, muscle tension and general aches and stiffness.

Osteopathic treatment is hands-on and tailored to the individual. Depending on the findings of the osteopathic assessment, treatment may include soft tissue techniques, stretching, joint mobilisation or manipulation, alongside movement, exercise and practical advice where appropriate.

There is no single approach that suits everyone. Osteopathic techniques can be adapted according to age, health, preferences and what feels appropriate and comfortable. Manipulation — sometimes described as ‘clicking’ — is only one of many techniques and is not an essential part of osteopathic treatment.

Whether symptoms are recent or have been present for some time, osteopathic care considers how they may be affecting movement, function and everyday life. Treatment is guided by the individual assessment rather than focusing solely on the area where symptoms are being felt.

What to expect from your osteopathy appointment

Good treatment starts with understanding the problem

No two people arrive with quite the same story. Your first osteopathy appointment starts with time to talk through what’s been happening, how it is affecting you, your medical history and the things you want to get back to doing.

This is followed by a thorough osteopathic assessment. Depending on your symptoms, this may include looking at posture, movement, joints, muscles and how different areas of your body are working together. The aim is to build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to the problem — not simply focus on where it hurts.

The findings will be explained and discussed with you, so you understand what has been found and the options available. Where osteopathic treatment is appropriate, treatment will usually begin at your first appointment and will be adapted to your individual needs and preferences.

Assessment continues throughout your care. Progress is reviewed, treatment is adapted as things change, and practical advice, movement or exercises may be included where they are useful to you.

And sometimes the right answer isn’t osteopathic treatment. If the assessment suggests that further investigation or another healthcare professional would be more appropriate, this will be discussed with you and onward referral or advice recommended where necessary.

Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession

Professional standards you can feel confident in

In the UK, the title osteopath is protected by law. Osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), have appropriate professional indemnity insurance and meet ongoing professional standards, including continuing professional development.

Grow Clinic combines those professional standards with an individual, considered approach to care. Appointments aren’t based around a predetermined number of treatments or a one-size-fits-all plan. Recommendations are guided by the assessment, your response to treatment and what is appropriate for you.

Whether the aim is to move more comfortably, return to an activity you enjoy, manage a longstanding musculoskeletal problem or understand a new one, the starting point is the same: listen, assess, explain, and make a plan that makes sense for you.
